Lecturer in Practical Christian Ministry
Elaine has had all her education in Northern Ireland and currently lives in Lisburn. She lived in New Zealand for three years, where she worked in administration and supervised a computer department. Apart from that, most of her working life has been involved in various aspects of education. She originally studied English, German and French and taught for four years in a Belfast Secondary school. After returning from New Zealand she worked for ICL computers, monitoring systems for universities in Belfast and Dublin, and subsequently had two children. She returned to teaching when they were at school. She was employed by the SEELB to teach English to children from other countries, which developed into writing and running courses for classroom teachers. Elaine studied part-time for a Masters in Guidance and Counselling. Her dissertation was based on ‘Stress and Stress Management’ for teachers. She was employed as School Counsellor for Friends Grammar School for three years. A call to study Theology led to a BD at BBC and an Associate Diploma. This led naturally to a desire to serve at BBC, in a practical and teaching capacity. She coordinates the practical training for the UoC degree and facilitates the Certificate, which leads to Degree Plus for QUB students. She tutors the RPM1 module, based on the weekly placement, and also leads the Family Ministry and Pastoral Care 11 modules.
Elaine's main research interests lie in the area of Practical Christian Ministry, specifically interventions for Christian sufferers of depression, eating disorders and addictions. She has already studied Art Therapy to an advanced level and would like to learn more about the application of other relaxation therapies, in a Christian context. Elaine recently attended a course on Coaching and believe that the skills, which she learned, will be helpful in her various roles at BBC.
Elaine has been involved in many voluntary roles in Elmwood Presbyterian church, which she and her husband attend. She has recently been asked to serve for a fourth term of committee, having served nine years already. She has served with various children’s and youth groups and has a real interest in Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, for which she and her husband are qualified Supervisors and Assessors. They have been involved with several Silver Award groups and have completed supervision of one hiking, 4 cycling and 1 canoeing group for Gold Award since2005. Her other main role is on the Mission Aim Team, where she is involved in conducting or organizing services and supporting and debriefing those who take part in short-term or long-term mission. She supports her husband in his voluntary roles as Director of Crown Jesus Ministries and Trustee of The Smiles Foundation, Romania. Elaine is actively involved in mentoring and prayer support for both organisations, as well as going on an annual mission trip to Romania.
